Message divorced style downpipes (even without the separators installed) allow the exhaust gases to be treated similarly to how they would flow under an external wastegate setup.

The external wastegate is superior to internal wastegates since the external wastegate keeps the re-directed exhaust gases separated, for a longer period, from the gases flowing through the turbine. This decreases turbulence from the gases mixing near the turbine. Turbulence increases backpressure, which decreases the turbo's ability to spool up quickly. I think the divorced pipes still let the gases remain mostly separated (even without the separators installed) since the gases will take the path of least resistance: and that is for the turbine gases to move down one of the divorced pipes and the wastegate gases to move down the other. There will be some crossflow of the gases, but not as much as a bell mouth style downpipe.

The removal of the separator creates enough turbulence to avoid boost creep, while still providing faster spool up than a bell mouth downpipe.
